The Cake
3- tiered from Queen of Cakes
We looked at 2 different cake vendors to do our wedding cake:
1)Our first consultation was with Queen of Cakes in Edina ($3.50/slice; $1.75 for filled sheet cake). They had many different fresh cakes ready to taste that they cut and put onto tasting plates. They also gave us a list of addition cake/filling options and told us that if there was anything we wanted to try, they'd make it up for us right now to taste/take home with us-I created a white cake and raspberry jam/white chocolate ganache filling to try. When we talked about design, they made up a great sketch to ensure that my vision matched their interpretation. We also talked about doing a groom's cake b/c my fiance was very excited about doing a Vikings/Iowa State themed cake-this was no big deal for them to do. We were very impressed with their cake as well as their customer service.
2)Buttercream ($3.75/slice; Sheet cakes not available)-BC was the designated *preferred* vendor by our reception venue, meaning that if we chose them, our deposit and cake cutting fee would have been waived. We had our consultation at the Minnetonka location (I went with my MOH) and were a little less than impressed. The cake tasted good, but wasn't amazing. All of the samples were pre-made up and wrapped in seran wrap on cardboard trays. The man that we met with did not seem very interested in our business and spent most of the time talking about what BC DOESN'T do. Most of the time was spent talking about BC and not so much about what I wanted for my wedding cake. My impression was that they have so many contracts set up with other venues that they don't need to fight for business, it's handed to them. When I asked him about designs and doing a groom's cake, he was unable to produce what we asked for since they don't "dye" cakes. (I wonder how they make red velvet cake then….).
In the end we chose Queen of Cakes even though it was more expensive to get our cake through them. We decided that we'd rather be giving our money to people who actually fight for it and who have better all-around customer service.
Flavors:
Tier1/3-Marble Cake with cookies and cream filling
Tier 2-White cake with raspberry jam and white chocolate ganache
Groom's Cake: A Vikings/Ace of Spades on top (which I drew/designed), and when you cut into it yellow and red marble cake to represent the colors of Iowa State University.
